 -About This Course
This qualification will provide you with the knowledge and a set of skills necessary to progress a career in the maritime industry. You will gain skills in shipboard safety, seamanship, assisting with engineering maintenance and operations.

The Integrated Rating (IR) course is an entry-level qualification to equip new entrants into the maritime industry with practical skills and knowledge in general shipboard operations of merchant ships. This course is the AMSA approved pre-sea training course required (along with the AMSA required sea service) for issuance of the AMSA Integrated Rating Certificate of Proficiency.

Integrated Ratings are responsible for:

  • assisting with cargo operations
  • conducting engine and navigational watches
  • assisting in berthing and unberthing
  • providing general deck operational assistance and maintain documentation.
  • general servicing and maintenance of the ship and its machinery.
  • maintain cleanliness of decks and structures
  • steering the ship under supervision
  • splicing ropes and wires.

As with any career at sea, being an IR will involve being away from home for weeks at a time, carrying out shift work in all weather, duties performed include working in extreme heat, confined space, extreme noise and adverse weather conditions, and also may involve working safely with hazardous materials.

Special Requirements:

        Minimum education requirement of Year 10 or equivalent

        Minimum age of 16

        Adequate Medical Fitness

 

Demonstration by an applicant of ability to obtain the required seatime is necessary to secure a position on the course.

 

It is advised to obtain an Australian Maritime Safety Authority Medical, including a colour blindness test, to ensure you are able to work as an IR prior to undertaking the course

 Fulltime attendance to the course is mandatory, Monday – Friday 8:30 – 1630.

 -Further Information

The course is comprised of two components: a college component and a sea service component.

·         The college component of the course involves approximately 15 weeks undertaking classroom training and is aligned to the education requirements for certification as an Integrated Ratings as described in Marine Orders Part 3.

·         The sea service component of the course involves 36 weeks at sea undertaking “on the job” training.

During your seatime, TAGS books will need completed during your sea service component and submitted to the college for marking.

 

TAGS Book 1 covers the first 12 weeks of your seatime

 

TAGS Books 2 – 5 covers the remaining 24 weeks. 

 

Once all course components are complete and your books have been marked, the Institute will provide you with a completion letter for AMSA.

 

To be eligible for an AMSA certification of proficiency, and work as an Integrated Rating, you must:

        Complete the approved training course (ie TDM30307)

        Be over 18 years of age

        Complete at least 36 weeks qualifying sea service on a designated ship

        Hold a current AMSA certificate of medical fitness

 

Note: You must gain 36 weeks of approved sea service BEFORE you are eligible to apply to AMSA for a Certificate of Competency.
